EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION:
Take a day trip from Reykjavik to explore the Vatnajökull glacier, the biggest glacier in Europe. It covers over 8100 km2 and has numerous outlet glaciers. We offer a private expert guided exploration including transfer, helicopter tour and a fun mix of hiking, ice climbing, ice caving (Nov - Mar) and sailing the beautiful glacier lagoon of Jökulsárlón (May - Sep).
Iceland is one of our favourite destinations and this is just a taster activity example.
DID YOU KNOW:
The Vatnajökull galcier covers 8% of Iceland's landmass and has an average thickness of approx. 500m. Far inland below the glacier's surface there is volcanic activity, namely the Grímsvötn volcano which last erupted in 2011.
CLIMATE & WHEN TO GO:
Thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current, Iceland is warmer than the name indicates with mild winters in the southern lowlands (0°C/32°F) and cool and bright summers. The aurora borealis is often visible at night time during the winter.
The weather is extremely changeable and notoriously unpredictable, so you should always be prepared when travelling in Iceland.
We'll make sure you stay warm while exploring the Vatnajökull glacier.
Best time to go is November through March for ice caving and May to September for sailing the glacier's lagoon.
